National Tax Conference 2026: Alan Chung Highlights Taxation's Role in Building Economic Resilience
The National Tax Conference 2026 kicked off yesterday, bringing together tax professionals and industry leaders to discuss the future of taxation, compliance and economic resilience.
Alan Chung, Senior Executive Director of Grant Thornton Malaysia and President of the Chartered Tax Institute of Malaysia (CTIM), delivered the welcome address at the National Tax Conference 2026, highlighting the critical role of taxation in strengthening Malaysia's economic resilience.
In his speech, he mentioned that as the global supply chain gradually recovers from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Malaysia's economy must further enhance its resilience, for example by strengthening the supply chain, ensuring the supply of key resources, and closely monitoring the impact of related costs on people's lives, in order to cope with external shocks.
"In this context, taxation plays a vital role in supporting a country in addressing challenges and maintaining economic function."
He pointed out that tax professionals are also entrusted with important responsibilities, which require them to perform their duties with impartiality and prudence to ensure that national financial resources are properly managed and to take into account both the interests of taxpayers and the overall interests of the country.
