Alan Chung is the Head of Indirect Tax & GST practice of SJ Grant Thornton.  Prior to joining SJ Grant Thornton as an Executive Director to lead the tax advisory team, Alan in addition to being attached to the “Big Four” accounting firms, has headed the secretarial of the Chartered Tax Institute of Malaysia’s (CTIM) and served as the Head of Tax of a public-listed company.  He has more than 20 years of experience in tax compliance, tax advisory and good and services tax (GST) and played a role in the implementation of the self-assessment system in Malaysia as a secondee to the Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia.              

Alan was a member of CTIM’s Self-Assessment System Working Group and is currently a member of CTIM’s Technical Committee–Indirect Taxation.  He has a wealth of experience dealing with various government agencies and departments and has represented CTIM in dialogues (Mesyuarat Jawatankuasa Teknikal Isu Pelaksanaan GST) with the RMCD to resolve GST implementation issues.  In addition, he is also a member of CPA Australia Malaysia Division Council’s Tax Committee. 

Alan speaks regularly in seminars and conferences including the GST Conference 2016 and the Sin Chew Business Excellence Awards 2015 and 2016.  He is also an experienced trainer of GST focused on disseminating GST knowledge and know-how to many corporations which include government-linked corporations and a statutory fund for employees.  Besides training, Alan has also co-authored a book on GST published by Wolters Kluwers Malaysia (formerly Commerce Clearing House (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd) in 2016, entitled “Malaysian GST: 100 Questions and Answers” (ISBN: 9789670853154).

Alan is a member of the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (Chartered Accountant) and Chartered Tax Institute of Malaysia (Associate), and a Fellow of CPA of Australia (FCPA). He is an approved tax agent under Section 170 of the Goods and Services Tax Act 2014 and Section 153 of the Income Tax Act 1967.
